Calabash pipe with Meerschaum bowl, and free beanbag
This Calabash pipe is fitted with a large, removable meerschaum bowl which overlaps the top of the calabash slightly.
The inside top of the calabash gourd is lined with a ring of cork to ensure an airtight fit for the turned meerschaum bowl.
The gourd is nicely curved, and fitted with a synthetic black tube which firmly holds the mock-amber Lucite mouthpiece.
Here is a perfect combination of the two natural products, Meerschaum and Calabash, to create a pipe that will provide a great smoke and improve in beauty with age.
The black tube for the mouthpieces is simple but elegant – enhancing the appearance of the pipe.
With use, the finish of the meerschaum has started to turn to the beautiful cream/ivory colour, but it has received a few dings, a sign of usage. Other than that the pipe is in excellent condition.
And to keep it that way, we include a beanbag pipe rest to hold it safely when you’re resting it between smokes.
Many years of pleasure to come, both looking at it and smoking it.

Calabash pipes – from the cured and dried neck of the calabash gourd, sourced from farmers in the Calitzdorp area of the Karoo.
This pipe appears to be one of many made by Willie Mattner in Johannesburg.
Meerschaum was not available for the lining of the bowls (as in Europe), so the pipes are finished by lining the neck with pure plaster of Paris (to form a bowl for the burning tobacco), and fitting with an individually turned wood insert to hold the mouthpiece.
The air space left below the lining ensures a cool, dry smoke, and the juices are absorbed into the shell itself allowing it to colour as it ages to a rich brown, like old polished leather.
The top of the bowl is finished with a brushed brass ring.
The shape is like an Oom Paul, well-balanced and less leverage on the teeth.
The pipe is in very good condition and the calabash gourd is starting to colour beautifully.
Original mouthpiece, no filter .
Plenty of smoking pleasure left in it.

The stamping on this pipe is so worn it took the camera to show me the true credentials and value. Mind you I did have a clue when I picked it up – incredibly light.
A fine piece of briar, with a good-sized bowl.
The bowl has strong cross-grain front and back, with very faint BirdsEye between. It seems that there is too little soft wood for a distinctive grain. However the cross=grain continues over the shank showing a nice differentiation of hard and soft briar.
I don’t think the mouthpiece is original. Certainly there is no logo, and the join with the shank is not flush.
The pipe has been well cared for, only slight burn marks around the inside rim of the bowl, and very few dings.
Thanks to the camera I can just see that the stamping is “Charatan’s Make” “London England” SPECIAL 33.
But even the camera couldn’t help with the scratchings to the left of the stamp.

It doesn’t seem to be from the period when the pipes were made in France since there are no letters after the shape number. It appears that all the other manufacturing periods provided pipes of Charatan/Dunhill quality – a great smoke.

The Humidifier contains small transparent non-toxic humidity control beads. They have the property of maintaining at around 70% the ambient relative humidity (RH) in your humidor (or any re-sealable container eg plastic bag, Tupperware).
(At 70°F (21°C), 70% is considered to be the ideal relative humidity in which to store your cigars.)
Remember that Relative Humidity is a function of temperature – it is the amount of water vapour in the air compared with the amount required to saturate the air at that temperature.
The important attribute of the beads is that when wet, they will release moisture when the RH falls below 70%, and absorb moisture if the RH goes above 70%, thus maintaining a constant relative humidity no matter how often the humidor is opened, or what the external conditions.
When dry they will absorb some moisture if the RH goes above 70%.
