254-DS DHDP Root 4103
A classic Billiard bowl with a taper stem. You can enjoy the beautiful straight grain on most of the bowl, and equally beautiful flame grain on the rest of the bowl, and along the shank. The rim and base of the bowl and the top and base of the shank have stunning clear Birdseye to match.
I haven’t been offered a Dunhill Root Briar for the last 2 years at least. The only pipes offered in that finish appear to have been selected for their grain and are being offered as Dunhill Straight Grains. The price is about a premium of 50% for 1 star straight grain (partially straight grain) to 12 times the normal Root Briar price for a 6 star full straight grain.
At this year’s prices this Dunhill would retail for over R30000 even though it is not marked Straight Grain.
Another interesting note – this pipe was manufactured in 2012, the year that Dunhill changed the branding from the circled Dunhill to The White Spot with Alfred Dunhill’s above and below.
This pipe must be one of the last to have the old stamp.
254-DS PsonSH Lestrade
AI overview: Inspector Lestrade (G. Lestrade) is a recurring, competent but conventional detective with Scotland Yard who frequently calls on Sherlock Holmes for his superior deductive skills, representing official policing clashing with Holmes's genius in Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. He's portrayed as a determined, tenacious, often slightly pompous man who relies on procedure but recognizes Holmes's unique ability, sometimes begrudgingly.
The pipe is a Full Bent Apple with excellent balance. Its tapered stem ensures a cool and pleasant smoke.
254-DS PsonSH Rathbone
This large curved tobacco pipe boasts a generous Billiard bowl with very straight sides, combining elegance and stature.
It pays tribute to Basil Rathbone, one of the earliest actors to portray Sherlock Holmes on screen.
His profile is used on the box, and stamped on the hallmarked sterling silver band.
254-DS PsonSH Strand SOLD
AI overview: In Sherlock Holmes stories, "The Strand" refers primarily to The Strand Magazine, the popular British monthly where most of Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic detective tales were first published, making it synonymous with the character and shaping his public image through illustrations, especially those by Sidney Paget, though it's also a real London street.
The street's name comes from the Old English strond, meaning the beach or edge of a river, as it historically ran alongside the north bank of the River Thames.
The pipe is a Quarter Bent Tall Apple with a refined and handy design, featuring a semi-straight stem that makes it unique in its kind.
254-DS SavAuto Panel R7000.00 (Normal price R14350) 6mm filter option
This is an intriguing pipe.
In one way it can look as if a textured rough cover has been fitted over part of the bowl.
There is even a fine ridge along the edge of the covered section.
But what has actually happened is that the whole pipe was sandblasted, with the front panel and the sides of the shank carefully polished removing the surface sandblasting in order to display the lovely grain.
The careful Free Styling between the smooth and the sandblasted areas warrant the Autograph status.
254-DS SavAutoSm6 Half-Bent Apple R7250.00 (Normal Price R15000) 6mm filter option
A lovely flame grain on two sides of the bowl, with Birdseye front and back, all curling back over the rim.
The bowl has been specially carved into the apple shape to make the most of that grain.
Not wanting to break the round line of the bowl, the shank and mouthpiece are round, then stepping into a saddle so that the lip is thinner for extra comfort in the mouth
254-DS SavAutoSm6 Quarter-bent Billiard R8000.00 (Normal price R15500) 6mm filter option
This is when you appreciate the artistry – this briar ebauchon couldn’t have been formed into any other shape.
ostThe straight grain almost all around the bowl just flows.
Even the inside of the bowl is perfect.
And the shank has been specially carved to make the most of the grain.
The corresponding birdseye grain is visible on the top and base of the bowl and shank.
Typical of Savinelli touch is the almost triangular stem
254-DS SavAutoSm6 Quarter-bent Dublin R7250.00 (Normal Price R15000) 6mm filter option
Here we are admiring one of the very few pipes of sufficient quality to carry the stamped Savinelli signature.
Glorious Straight grain and slightly twisting Flame grain cover most of the surface of this Signature pipe.
As described by Giancarlo Savinelli, who personally selects these pipes, they are hand-designed, unique and unrepeatable.
An exceptionally elegant pipe.
254-DS SavColl 2008 Sb 6mm option
The traditional Oom Paul, but with a slightly taller bowl than the classic. A stunning touch is the smooth curved rim to the bowl, separated from the sandblasted area by a fine indented line. The smooth top and the smooth ring on the shank give an impression of lightness.
254-DS SavColl 2009Sb 6mm option
A really large, chunky sandblasted Bulldog, with a sloping “saddle” stem for comfort.
The sandblasted shank is finished with a smooth section which lightens the whole pipe.
The signed mouthpiece has a 6mm option.
254-DS SavColl 2010 Sb
A variation of Savinelli’s classic Author model 320, with a saddle stem. This time the briar insert is part of the curved saddle mouthpiece. The smooth briar lightens the pipe design, giving it an unexpected harmony for such a massive pipe.
254-DS SavColl 2011 Sb 6mm option
Described as a bent billiard, this pipe has a slightly wider bowl, almost a pot. Most striking is the smooth bevelled rim which confirms the quality of the briar. And the usual smooth briar extension of the shank is straight grain. What a beautiful pipe.
Included is a briar/brass tamper and a rich navy velveteen carry pouch.
The pipe is unsmoked, but the original box was lost along the way.
254-DS SavColl 2012 Sm R4900.00 6mm option
The briar bowl is halfway between Brandy and Egg style. The bowl features swirling flame grain with some Birdseye, which continues along the shank. The very long, cylindrical shank is slightly conic and as a result looks even longer to the eye thanks to the briar insert on the mouthpiece.
