The pipe usually named “Churchwarden” in English, is known in German as Lesepfeife (reading pipe). The word “Lectura” in Spanish translates as “reading”, Sala de Lectura is Reading Room.
This Big Ben Lectura pipe is aptly named.
“BIG BEN” is the pipe brand of the Royal Dutch Pipe Factory, the only briar pipe manufacturer in the Benelux countries, known for its innovative shapes and finishes.
Developing from an importer and wholesaler of pipes, Elbert Gubbels decided to manufacture pipes instead of relying on imports. The company started with a small factory, which soon became too small and step by step grew bigger.
In December 1972 the company opened new and very modern factory in Roermond at Keulsebaan 505. With the official opening by the Governor of the Province of Limburg, the Gubbels company was, on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, granted the title “Royal” so that the official name became: Elbert Gubbels & Zonen – Koninklijke Fabriek van Tabakspijpen (Elbert Gubbels & Sons – Royal Dutch Pipe Factory).
