Calabash with Plaster of Paris lining, Full Bent, Saddle mouthpiece

R850.00

Calabash pipes – from the cured and dried neck of the calabash gourd, sourced from farmers in the Calitzdorp area of the Karoo.
This pipe appears to be one of many made by Willie Mattner in Johannesburg.
Meerschaum was not available for the lining of the bowls (as in Europe), so the pipes are finished by lining the neck with pure plaster of Paris (to form a bowl for the burning tobacco), and fitting with an individually turned wood insert to hold the mouthpiece.
The air space left below the lining ensures a cool, dry smoke, and the juices are absorbed into the shell itself allowing it to colour as it ages to a rich brown, like old polished leather.
The top of the bowl is finished with a brushed brass ring.
The shape is like an Oom Paul, well-balanced and less leverage on the teeth.
The pipe is in very good condition and the calabash gourd is starting to colour beautifully.
Original mouthpiece, no filter .
Plenty of smoking pleasure left in it.
Weight 65g
Inside bowl diameter 19mm
Inside bowl depth 34mm

Description

The Calabash pipe
Made from the neck of a gourd that has been deliberately shaped during its growth, the Calabash offers a different experience in smoking. Being extremely porous, the Calabash is virtually self-cleaning in that any moisture absorbed from the smoke passes through the pipe and evaporates, colouring the pipe to a rich brown. Being a natural product, grown in the open air, it is subject to the vicissitudes of nature – which means it will usually have small surface marks from the action of weather or insects. Once the pipe has been well coloured these marks look like “beauty spots” on the rich brown surface.

The pipes are individuals – each one is different; the shape depends on the bend of the original gourd.
The farm outside Calitzdorp is no longer supplying calabash gourds for pipes, but I’ve been told that further north in Africa production has started.
