Design Berlin Skipper Rustic SOLD

R1,350.00

This is a big piece of briar, yet the shape is very well balanced – just hangs. The inner bowl is medium/large.
The smooth curved rim shows close cross grain, ending in beautiful tight Birdseye.
The bowl is in faultless condition. And the rusticated finish seems to copy the grain of the rim down the bowl.
The mouthpiece appears to be a replacement, no db stamp. It follows the line of the shank perfectly, and of course the smoking quality comes from the bowl.
The shank is bored for a 9mm tenon, but the replacement mouthpiece is non-filter.
(You could, of course, have a new mouthpiece fitted, with a 9mm tenon.)
In recent years a db Skipper was on sale for CAD224.95. Around R4300.
Weight 59g
Inside bowl diameter 17mm
Inside bowl depth 37mm

Description

Design Berlin is, as the name suggests, a German pipe-making company – and is in fact the number two best-selling German pipe brand after Vauen. Around 12 master pipe makers use exclusively Greek briar and produce around 20000 pipes a year.
The company was started in 1948 as Pfeifenstudio Hartmann.
The first pipes were simple cheap pipes mostly used for shag (fine cut cigarette tobacco).
In 1954 Lotar Schirwitz joined the company. His love was for Danish and Italian shapes.
He improved the quality of the pipes being manufactured, and the Design Berlin brand was created.
In the early 1980s Planta Tabak-Manufaktur acquired the company.
