Some “slightly flawed” blocks show a large degree of hard wood and excellent grain – it seemed a waste to rusticate the whole bowl to cover these flaws.
The ingenious “spot carving” was born.
This leaves the background grain open to inspection,
while the random spot surface flaws are carved over.
The pipes are completed a with toning cappuccino-brown mouthpiece.

If you stand back and look at them you can see the Dublin, Apple and Billiard shapes on which the designs are based.
And the design is perfect – the ridge is just where the pipe will be held – snug in either hand.
But the finish is new from Riccardo – he calls it “Sandpebble”.
Beautifully carved it offers “sandblasted-look” finishes more dramatic than natural sandblasting,
which rely on the natural grain of the briar.
